The Express Lanes provide congestion relief and help ease demand on the general purpose lanes. The I-15 Express Lanes were designed to offer choices and to provide high occupancy vehicles (HOVs) like carpools and vanpools, zero-emission vehicles with an approved Clean Air Vehicle Sticker issued by the California DMV, motorcycles, MTS Rapid, and FasTrak customers with a smoother, quicker, and more reliable trip along the I-15 corridor. See FAQ for who can use the lanes when the "HOV ONLY" message is displayed.įrequently Asked Questions Why were the I-15 Express Lanes built? If you enter the Express Lanes before the message is displayed, you can complete your trip and will not be fined. When this happens, signs will indicate "HOV ONLY." Solo FasTrak users are not permitted to enter the Express Lanes when "HOV ONLY" signs are displayed. Occasionally, the Express Lanes fill to capacity, and there is no excess room for solo drivers. If the Express Lanes have room - you can zoom (within the speed limit)! By converting the existing carpool lanes on the Interstate 105 Freeway, it can also help reduce the bottleneck effect where it meets the Interstate 110 as it has the direct transition ramp from its carpool lane into the Express Lanes of the Interstate 110.Vehicles with two or more drive free every day! ![]() ![]() This kind of change is beneficial to commuters by allowing solo drivers to drive in the carpool lane by paying a fee, giving them more options and a better commute. In the westbound direction, on the other hand, after it passes Interstate 110, the carpool lane would free up and provide abundant capacity to accommodate more, giving those who do not meet the occupancy requirement the opportunity to enjoy guaranteed speeds of nearly 65mph. The Interstate 105 Freeway in the eastbound direction is often overcrowded after it passes the Interstate 405 Freeway when the carpool lane actually begins and from there and up until it meets Interstate 110, the carpool lane also known as the diamond lane tends to suffer from its success due to the bottleneck effect that occurs where it meets the Interstate 110 where FasTrak solo drivers can temporarily enter the carpool lanes to access the Express Lanes on the Interstate 110. The reason why I think this is a good idea is because the existing carpool lanes of the Interstate 110 Freeway, known as the Harbor Freeway have already been converted into Express Toll Lanes and that the Interstate 105 Freeway has a direct transitioning ramp from its carpool lanes into the northbound direction of the Interstate 110 Freeway. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority should plan on converting the existing carpool lanes on the Interstate 105 Freeway, known as the Glenn Anderson (Century) freeway into Express Toll Lanes.
